MISCELLANEOUS: Humidity
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: One of the main sensations that lasted in me after visiting Mumbai was the humidity you could feel everywhere.

Maybe it was due to Monsoon Season, but everything was tropical and humid. You could feel it in the air and see it in the buildings, most of which had those dark spots on the white facades.

    CULTURE: The colonial heritage
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Since in 1668 the British East India Company received this lands from the crown and founded the modern city, Mumbai (former Bombay, from the portuguese name "Bom Bahia", Good Bay) has been filled with many architectural samples from the Metropoli.

It's weird to see such British buildings and double decker buses in such a tropical and hunid atmosphere. Most of them are a bit ruined by the high humidity, but certainly keep that old colonial air that makes them so interesting...

    GATEWAY OF INDIA: Colaba Area
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: This is the southernmost part of the Peninsula, the area where Mumbai was founded from an archipelago that was filled with earth to build the core of the city on it.

Its center is the Gateway of India, at the end of the lively Apollo Bunder and the main avenue Colaba Causeway. It is a very busy area day and night, and one of the touristic centres of Mumbai.

  • An alley in the muslim quarter
  • by SirRichard
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Favorite Thing: Being a extreme city, streets in Mumbai are either huge avenues with colosal colonial administrative buildings, or narrow alleys, sometimes unpaved with simple houses.

And getting to know Mumbai is getting to know both extremes. Dare to get lost in the labyrinths of narrow alleys where most of the daily life takes place, look up and gaze at the windows, into the gates... explore!

    GATEWAY OF INDIA: Mumbai's skyline
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The most distinctive skyline of Mumbai is the one you can see when you take the boat to Elephanta Island. As you go out from Gateway of India, you can see the silhouette of the Gate and the Taj Mahal Hotel, both the old building and the new one (that ugly big tower at the left).

find your comment about the *sea shore hotel* silly! it is a BUDGET place; of course there are staff sleeping there at night - they live at the hotel, travelling back home every few months..this is the situation for millions globally; have respect!

Rs. 6 is about $0.15 - tourist trap? Mumbai is no more dangerous than any other big city anywhere in the world - inlcuding london and new york
