Mumbai, a gate of India...

by SirRichard - last update: Dec 23, 2003

Me at the Gateway
Mumbai (actual name of the former Bombay) is a vibrant & chaotic indian city. Depending on the mood you are while reaching it, it might be delightful or hateful. It's a extreme city, lots of traffic, big avenues, charming and imposing british burocratic buildings, shanty towns...
You can take a look at my Travel Diary, with comments and watercolor drawings...
Mumbai's location

A good starting point

As a start point to discover south / west India, Mumbai is perfect. It has international airport, good bus/train connections... though hotel prices are incredibly high for indian standards, so don't stay too much in this vibrant but exhaustinf city, go inside India, start the trip!

Monsoon

I visited Mumbai in august, monsoon time. It was OK for me, as it was low season, and rain was never a trouble for travelling. I only had a few drops (for 30-40 minutes) every afternoon, but apart from that the weather was mild, not too hot and humid, but the sun shined some days...

find your comment about the *sea shore hotel* silly! it is a BUDGET place; of course there are staff sleeping there at night - they live at the hotel, travelling back home every few months..this is the situation for millions globally; have respect!

Rs. 6 is about $0.15 - tourist trap? Mumbai is no more dangerous than any other big city anywhere in the world - inlcuding london and new york
