Kios (Gemlik) has been established by a Greek commander who was returning from the war in 1390 B.C and this location has been named as Styits.
According to Arganouts there was a nice harbor when a city was established here and this harbor has been filled up with aluvions that were dragged from the mountains and hills in the back.
Gemlik has been under the rule of Egyptians, Romans, Persians, lonians,Byzantians and Ottomans, respectively. This place has been conquered by the Ottomans in the period of Osman Ghazi.

The name of the city is referred as Ceus, Kios, Ghio, Gio, Prusa in various sources and this harbor has been used as a quay for the armies to be send to the inner parts of the Anatolia during the Crusades. And it has been referred with names such as Civitot, Civitpot .

The name of the districts has been changed from Gemilik to Gemlik in time.
