"Berchtesgaden" Berchtesgaden by StefanosS

Being on family vacations in Austria, in July 1970, we visited Berchtesgaden, known as Hitler's Eagle-nest.

From Saltzburg, we passed the border by car and reached the village of Berchtesgaden. The road leading to Hitler's Eagle-nest was very narrow, and we had to get on special busses going there.

The Eagle-nest is built on the top of a rocky peak. The entrance is through a tunnel leading to a huge underground elevator that takes visitors to the top.

The old military installations have been converted to a tourist restaurant-bar. From there, the view of the surrounding is magnificent! Although summer sun was really burning, there was still some snow and some tourists, dressed in their bathing-clothes, were having snowball fights! Great fun watching them!

After that, we visited also the beautiful Königssee, a village by the lake with the same name.
