Christmas in Damascus

by xaver - last update: Jan 5, 2004

Sayyida Ruqayya Mausoleum
Awfully I spent in this beautiful town just one day and it was definitly enough to make me wish to come back to explore more this great city and the all country.
I came here on Christmas from Beirut. This year I wanted a santa free Christmas, but, once in Beirut I had a bad surprise, big Christmas tree on the main square with a lot of teen dancing and singing wearing their Santa's hats, that made me think: where am I?
So I decided to spend the day after(25) in Damascus and, going around the city centre and entering the main mosques, I had my day.
Christmas is not celebrated there and it was incredible to see how deep concentration and how much passion those people put in their prayers inside their holy temples, did not see the same passion even in our shopping centres during the Christmas delirious.

It's good to know there is at least one place in the world where it is possible to have a Santa-free Christmas.
