"Yemen, an extremely under-rated destination" Yemen by K1W1

I've been hearing bad publicity from all corners since I told friends that Yemen was on my 'to see' list. My friends advised me not to come, the NZ consul (following his official instructions) advised me not to come, and all the western media say the same. Yemen is one of the 'axis of evil' but ironically, I have found so far that countries under this mantle are among the friendliest and most interesting countries in the world. It was a hassle to get here, but boy was it worth it. Yemen has some amazing architecture, culture, traditions... and it is all 100% authentic ! There's no contamination from the West and tourists are at an absolute minimum. For those looking for a destination that still has authenticity, Yemen is among a select few and I highly recommend it.
Shibam appears like a mirage in the desert. This amazing city is constructed of mud sky scrapers, many of which are 7 and 8 stories high. Now protected by UNESCO, the city is a living museum and as yet is not overcome by tourists.

wonderful, wonderful pages, Peter.
I am green with envy - this rates as one of my top 'must-do' destinations. I would be very grateful if you could drop me a line and tell me how you travelled, organised it etc. Thanks
