Sana is undoubtedly one of the most fantastic old cities I have seen. It has not been contaminated by tourism and has retained an authentic and traditional atmosphere. Everyone wears traditional clothing (no jeans, trainers or baseball caps to be seen), the shops sell goods that they have for centuries (no tacky souvenir shops here), the tradesmen and craftsmen work in the streets like they would have been doing hundreds of years ago. Even the gardens, surrounded by high walls within the city, are still being nurtured to produce fresh vegetables and fruits. The buildings and architecture are unique, made of mud bricks and where the patterned and whitewashed window frames really make this city stand out from the rest. Sana is a gem which few are lucky enough to experience. |
