Kanchanaburi is just 130kms west of Bangkok and was put on the map when the Japanese decided to build their railway through the province and use POW's to do it. The conditions that the POW's worked in are now the stuff of legend and over 10,000 workers died. The tracks became known as the death railway. The movie 'The bridge over the River Kwai' brought fame to the area and with it, the tourist economy that keeps the place going.
Other attractions to this quiet town include the incredible Tiger Temple, Erawan waterfalls and more WW 2 sites like Hell Fire Pass, museums and cemetaries of POW's who died here.

This cemetary lies on the main road and is the largest of 3 on the Burma - Siam railway, otherwise known as the Death Railway. During WW2 the Japanese decided to use POW's and civilians to build this railway between the two countries in order to find a shorter, more secure line of supply for their war needs. Please see more under 'Things to do' for more information on this sobering and thought provoking monument in Kanchanaburi.

It's good to know the "3 meter rule" when posing for pictures with tigers. I believe I can remember that one!
Nice photos! Have you seen Globerover's travelogue on the River Kwai Bridge? http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/2ca2a/#TL
