Kythnos island belongs to province of Kea, at Kyklades island complex. The distance is 52 nautical miles from Piraeus. Is also known as Thermia and the ancient name is Ofiousa, Dryopis. According to tradition, the island was named after the leader of the Driopes who settled the island around 12th century BC.
There are scheduled ferry boats departing Piraeus or Lavrio to Merihas port on the western side of the island, and the lasts takes 2-3 hours.Or by hovercraft (flying Dolphin) from Piraeus, Marina Zeas and Rafina to the port of Kythnos, the trip lasts 2 hours. Kythnos is ideal for quiet holidays. One can have coffee or ouzo along with locals at Messaria's few nice coffee shops enjoying the lovely landscape. The island's tavernas and restaurants in Merihas, serve fresh fish, seafood and local delicacies. |
