ON THE STREETS: Contradictions... the old and the new

  • One of the first things we saw as we reached the center of Mumbai was this cart, by the side of the road. I thought, "Whoa. I'm really here." Brought it all home.

  • Try not to be shocked by the multitudinous beggars... women shoving their babies in the taxi window, people with terrible deformities... you'll see it, and eventually numb (sad as that may be) somewhat.

    If you dress in the local attire, you're less likely to be pestered too much. However, even when I was wearing salwar kameez, no makeup, etc., I was nearly constantly hounded for money or to buy something or whatever. It was exhausting!

  • On the grounds of the Red Fort, in New Delhi, there were plenty of families relaxing for a late afternoon picnic. It was a peaceful calm in an otherwise bustling and busy city.
