Schiedam just around the corner.

I lived my whole live in Vlaardingen so once in a while i visit Schiedam.

Schiedam has been changing a lot in the last years. I remember it mostly as an old City with a lot of old buildings in it. I also remember the fights that took place at the bus station between Vlaardingen and Schiedam, these hapened on a regular base when i was about 10 or 12 years old. Nowadays i don't hear those things anymore.

It seems that we learned to live next to each other over the years.

Despite the closeness of Schiedam we don't visit it that much we usually skip it and go to Rotterdam.

But during a beautifull spring weekend we visited Schiedam and played tourist.

History

Historical harbour of Schiedam

Schiedam or scyedam as it was called at his birth started it excistence in 1250. Dirk Bokel made a dam in the river called Schie. He wanted to protect his hunting and fishing area against the sea.

Another advantage this dam had was that ships werent able to travel onward so the had to leave their shipment in Schiedam to other ships.

This started of schiedam as a settlement.

The city rights where obtained on march 18 1275 from lady Aleiden who build her castle in schiedam in 1262.

Great page !! Mijn man heeft me ooit eens een rondleiding gegeven door Schiedam want hij komt er vandaan. Ik zou er nog graag eens het museum voor moderne kunst bezoeken......

Since joining VT, I too have gone to nearby places to take pictures of things I normally wouldn't photograph.
