"Confessions of a Travel Nerd" picklegirl's Profile

Hey there everyone! Thanks for stopping by! Unfortunately, outside of a few tips on Tallin Estonia, I haven't any pages up yet. They will be coming though (please no time limits Niksa + Bobby). When my pages do magically apprear..prepare to have your knickers knocked off!! ;-)

Traveling is a HUGE passion and hobby of mine, albeit not a particularly cheap one. Perhaps the best thing about VT is it affords me the opportunity to travel vicariously through all of you! SO KEEP ON TRAVELIN' !!

When I'm not playing on VT, I'm either glued to my work office chair (Blaaah. I know, I know. I forgot to buy my Powerball ticket last week and I haven't been introduced to Bill Gates' twin yet, so work it is!!) On my downtime, I love relaxing with close friends, reading, harassing my cat (hey! it's usually my cat who starts it!!), watching college basketball (pro's are too stuck on themselves and are 500 times overpaid in my book), and taking photos (i gravitate toward nature and animals, but my goal is to take pictures of everyday people...in their everyday lives and everyday environments). Of course, I LOVE traveling...therefore much of my time is devoted to learning about new places, planning trips, (or fantasizing about planning trips), etc. The travel bug has stung me and it's stung HARD! I wouldn't wish this on anyone! :-)) My dream is to take one year off and to travel the globe. (I admire all you backpackers out there who can do this, or even those of you who can weasel a job abroad.)

As far as my travel STYLE goes, I usually do most of my traveling alone. I like the freedom to do WHAT I want and WHEN I want to. Since I have to fend for myself, I usually discover that I become more outgoing (I'm on the shy side by nature) and of course, I'm totally independant. Yeah, there are times when I get lonely (at night when I want to go to a local bar but don't have the courage to go it alone, or when I want my picture taken in front of THE tourist attraction and have to ask a stranger to snap away), and there are times when I get a little frightened (like the island boy who kept conveniently "running in to me". He mega-creeped me out, but I kept a coconut in my back pocket at all times for protection. Never underestimate the power of a coconut. I hear they can be a mean weapon!!) But....I still think solo traveling is enjoyable. Besides, many of the places that I choose to visit my friends have either never heard of, or have no desire to visit.

....which leads me to the second aspect of my travel style: Location! I'm drawn to places that the average American traveler, doesn't normally go. Everyone's been to Paris or London or Rome, but how many Americans can say they've been to Tallinn? Or Mostar? Or Sliema? When I announce travel plans for my next trip, I either get asked, "Where is THAT?!" or my favourite, "Is it safe there? (YES, Would I REALLY risk my life? DUH!) and "can't you stay on THIS continent?!" I enjoy reading about the places I go, experiencing the cultures first hand, and then coming home to educate those around me. Although I love my country and am proud to be an American, perhaps what irks me most about my people is that we as a society know so very little of others. It's sad.

On a lighter note, I've met some AMAZING people on VT! For those I have met in person, two words: THANK. YOU. I have had memorable and priceless experiences with you ALL.
To those friends who I haven't had the luxury to meet yet...prepare yourselves..consider yourselves warned...YOUR DAYS ARE A COMIN'! ;-)

Happy travels to all-
Debbie

Birthday Greetings Debbie. Have a special day and treat yourself. Why not travel Downunder to Australia where not many Americans visit.
