Located in the Finnmark highlands, with long straight roads in what seems to be in the middle of nowhere, Kautokeino is pretty much the centre of the North Sámi communities. Its geographic location makes it the prime location for many of the major Sámi festivals, and is therefore often considered the centre of Sámi culture. (Be aware, however, that different Sámi communities do have different culture, and it is therefore misleading to consider a homogenous Sámi culture.)
