This square is located next to the Kalverstraat and by foot about five minutes from Central Station. On this square is the National Monument op de Dam, that was built in 1956 as a symbol of the end of the Second World War. Just follow the pigeons to find it :) Close to this square, you'll find Magna Plaza shopping mall, Madame Tussaud's, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and department store Bijenkorf.

The many canals in Amsterdam called for bridges. That's why you'll see lots of them. The most photographed one probably is the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) that spans over the river Amstel and consists of two parts that can be raised to let boats pass by.

'Holland has more museums per square foot than any country on earth and Amsterdam boasts 42 of the finest'. Some of the most famous painters were born in the Netherlands: Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Mondriaan for example. You'll find many of their works (including Rembrandt's 'Nightwatch') and that of other masters (Cézanne, Chagall, Picasso and Monet) in one of these museums: The Rijksmuseum The Van Gogh Museum The Stedelijk Museum

Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, and her family hid in a secret back annex of her father Otto's business during the Second World War. They hid there for two years, before they were betrayed and deported to the notorious concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen, where she died. All this time she had kept a diary which now is world famous. The house she hid in, has been transformed into a museum dedicated to her life.

Maybe the best way to discover Amsterdam. You can take a tour by boat or if you're energetic you can hire a water bike. Most boats depart from locations close to the Central Station and tours, offered in many languages, cost about $10.

Shopping in Amsterdam is a lot of fun, especially because there is such a large variety in shops: exclusive brands, skate shops, tourists shops, record stores, book stores and so on. Most of the stores are located in the Kalverstraat. Luxury items can be found in Magna Plaza.
