Many of Rome's famous places and buildings are located within walking distance from each other. You should definately start at the Forum Romanum. This mix of pillars, triumphal arches, temples and other remainders of the Roman Empire shows you what the ancient Rome must have been like. There are books for sale that show you the current views and uses transparent overlays to give you an idea of the old Rome. This is quite nice and worth the money.

This 'temple to all gods' is located on the Piazza Rotondo. The interior is as well as the exterior are gorgeous. Inside you'll find several statues and you can see the sunlight shine through a large hole in the top of this dome. On the floor there's a little water-reservoir for rainy days.

This large 'castle' has served variuos purposes, ranging from a tomb to a hiding place for the pope (it is connected to the Vatican). The bridge that leads to Castel San Angelo is usually crowded with salespersons. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the inside of this building.

One of the most famous remainders of the Roman Empire is the Colosseum. Used mainly for gladiator fights and sports, this was the place for entertainment. The exterior of this recently renovated structure is very impressive, the interior looks a little weird because there's no real arena anymore, you look at the foundations.

Situated in the centre of Rome, this is a nice place to rest and enjoy some Italian ice-cream. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes, where you can sit in the sun and watch the Fountain of the Four Rivers.

Acquired their name from the Spanish embassy that was located there at the time they were build (1722). It is a great place to relax and enjoy the sun. In the evening, the gorgeous Bernini fountain at the base of the steps (Piazza de Spagna), is beautifully lit.

This fountain is known all over the world. Tossing a coin into the ice-blue water of this beautiful work of art is said to ensure that one day you will return to Rome. The area around the Trevi fountain is always crowded with local people and tourists. I would recommend a nightly visit: it doesn't get better than this! The sight of the Trevi in the evening is simply enchanting...

These are underground burial sites. In the beginning they were only burial places. Here the Christians gathered to celebrate their funeral rites, the anniversaries of the martyrs and of the dead. Later they became real shrines of the martyrs, centres of devotion and of pilgrimage for Christians from every part of the empire. In compliance with the Roman law, which forbade the burial of the dead within the city walls, all catacombs are located outside the city, along the great consular roads, generally in the immediate suburban area of that age.

'The beautifully preserved ruins of Ostia lie twenty miles from Rome, in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was founded, probably in the 4th century BC, as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. Later, during the centuries when virtually all imports reached the Capital via the Tiber, Ostia gained prominence as the domestic landing for cargo boats. By the 2nd century AD, it had become a flourishing commercial center inhabited by upwards of 100,000 people, whose apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops are still intact.'
