Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument) The Swiss officers and 760 guards officers who died defending Louis XVI of France at the Tuileries in Paris in 1792 are commemorated here. Designed by Danish sculptor Berthel of Konstanz, the 19th century wonder is a simple, stirring image of a dying lion. The Latin inscription translates: 'To the bravery and fidelity of the Swiss'.

Kappellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) The oldest wooden bridge in Europe snakes diagonally across the Reuss. Named after nearby St. Peter's Chapel. Built in the early 14th century, it served as the division between the lake and the river. In 1993 this bridge were in fire and almost 80% of this bridge was destroyed, including many of the 17th century paintings inside. As you walk pass through this bridge notice the painted panels, painted by Heinrich Wägmann in the 17th century. The paintings depict Lucerne and Swiss history, stories of St.Leodegar and St. Mauritius, Lucern's patron saints, and coats of arms of local patrician families.

This octagonal over 34 meter high tower was built ca. 1300 as part of the city wall. Used as archieves, treasury, prison and torture chamber. Lucerne's trademark and the most photographed monument in Switzerland

Spreuerbrücke (Mills Bridge)The second most famous bridge of Lucerne. Built in 1407 and restored in the 19th century, this wooden bridge spans an arm of the Reuss. Medieval in style, its gables are painted with the Dance of Death, a mural by Kaspar Meglinger dating from the 17th century. The mural commemorates a plague that swept through the city. . Can you see the water spikes? A unique sight from the technical standpoint. The so-called 'spikes' are lowered or withdrawn by hand into the water to regulate the water level. It replaced in 1859-60 the Reuss steps that chanelled the water over the citymills.

The breathtaking view of Engelberg town covered with snow from the cablecar we took is almost like a picture postcard or a winter wonderland stories I've read when I was young :) As we ascend further, the town gets farther -looks like match-boxes!
