One of the giant rivers

by heuf - last update: Jun 20, 2005

We went on a three day trip to the Orinoco delta. From Pto La Cruz we went to Santa Fe and further on to the Orinoco delta. The Orinoco is one of the great rivers on earth. From the Amazonas the river flows through Venezuela and like the Nile it ends in a triangle form into the Caribbean Sea. One of the highlights on the road to the delta was the Cueva del Guacharo. It’s a Cage which is home to the Guacharo bird. This is the only place on earth were this bird lives. During daytime they sleep in the cage and as the sun goes down they fly out. This is a great experience as they fly just over your head. The sound they make is enormous and as the guide told us the sound of the birds was used in the Hitchcock movie “the birds”.
We stayed the night in a beautiful hacienda near ……….

Orinoco delta, the best way to visit the delta is by boat, it’s a lifetime experience to slide over the narrow waterways through the trees. Colorful parrots and monkey’s in the trees above your head. Piranha’s in the brown water below, image an Amazone boattrip, that’s the Orinoco.
Suddenly you see a wooden hut above the water. Just some piles with a simple roof of leafs. In it a couple of hammocks, Indians! As we enter the house we see some children lying in a hammock. There is no solid floor in the hut, just branches and we can see the brown water through it. There is no earth, they literally live on the water, how do they come through the day?
