the city

Venezuela the best kept secret

As people ask me what’s the most beautiful country I visited, I always answer South Africa, Australia and……….Venezuela.
I visited Venezuela in 1995, with the sweet memories of our trip to Jamaica in mind we wanted to visit the Caribbean again but not just a small island. Then I saw a brochure of a travel agency called Q-International. Between the common Isla Margarita offers we saw a small advertisement about Puerto La Cruz, a city on the main land of Venezuela. “Allrighty that’s it” so we booked the Christina hotel in Pto La Cruz.
Pto la Cruz is a small city near Isla Margarita, and the Mochima Parc and a great base to start some one or more day trips. PLC is the holiday city of Venezuelans, it has a great beach road (Paseo Colon) where it is party every evening. There are many restaurants, bars and merengue dancehalls. Watch out for those meringue dancehalls, watching the local people dancing their merengue I felt like the giant iceman (with my 1m92 I was by far the largest bloke there). They dance like their are made of jelly, it’s pure sex but surely a pleasure to watch them dancing. I am not a dancer (that’s an understatement, I can say on the dance floor I move like a pregnant hippo) and there’s the trap… what to do if someone asks you if you wanna dance? Yep the weak excuse, “sport injury can’t dance right now!”

If you stay in Pto La Cruz you have to visit the islands before the coast. The beach of PLC is polluted mainly from the oil industry but the islands have beautiful beaches. You can get there with boattaxi’s which leave from the harbor.

On the Paseo Colon there is a small bar called …… This is a meetingplace for adventures who travel around the world by boat. We went to that bar several times and we met Eric, a fellow Dutchman who sold his house three years ago and bought a boat to travel around the world. As he needed cash we agreed to make a day trip on his sailing boat for $10 p.p. It was a great experience, sailing around the islands before the coast, dolphins swimming and playing with the boat. Spectacular was the rope behind the boat. As the Caribbean sun burns like hell to cool off we jumped on the front end into the sea. You had to be very very quick to catch the rope hanging behind the ship. Luckily I got the rope as I wasn’t font of laying in the middle of the Caribbean sea with no land in sight and a boat which takes at least 20 minutes to turn around.
