<font color=green font face=courier new>Yes, there is Brest in Belarus too!...</font> :-)
Among 6 Belarusian regional centers Brest is the most western. It is located at the confluence of two rivers - Boog and Mukhavets, right on the Belarusian-Polish border. In the beginning of its history, the town had another name (Bierascie), and was first mentioned under this name in 1019. The current name Brest got only in the early 1900s. One of the main trade ways between Europe and Russia passed (and still does) through the town. That is the reason why Brest has always been a "dainty thing" for different occupants. It had changed hosts many times. Belarusian in the beginning, the town had been governed by Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Russia, and finally had been returned to Belarus after the WWII.
Nowadays Brest is quite big town with hectic atmosphere. Every day thousands of people cross it, traveling to the East or West both by train and Brest-Minsk-Moscow highway.
