Picture: Tanzania : Dodoma, view from Simba Hill, February 1994
We visited Dodoma on several occasions during our stay in Tanzania in 1994. On the day of our arrival in Tanzania by plane, my brother-in-law picked us up in Dar-es-Salaam and drove us to Dodoma. We visited the Jamboree Hotel, which has a very quiet and pleasant garden. The German travel guidebook Hayit describes it as a "Biergarten" (beer garden), but I found that to be a slightly inaccurate description. From the hotel we left for our final destination, Mvumi.
We returned to Dodoma after a couple of days. This time we visited the market square and had a closer look at one of the churches and a mosque. We also bought a small handheld "piano", called a sanza, from two youngsters for 2400 T. Shilling. After that we went to the local "Climax social club" with a private swimming pool.
A few days later, on another trip to town, we visited the social club again ; this time we also went out of town to climb Lion Hill, or "Simba Hill" as it is also called ("Simba" being the Swahili word for lion). There's a splendid view from the top. Unfortunately, upon our return we discovered that money and personal belongings had been stolen from our car! |
