My brother and I are Polish on our mother's side, but by the time we were born, the family had been pretty much Americanized--I don't remember my great-aunts, who were born here, ever making pierogi or anything like that, although I remember they sometimes spoke Polish if they didn't want us to kno what they were saying. I wish they had taught it to me, since we learn languages so much more easily as children. Ah well.
My brother, who is in law school, went to Krakow one summer for a six-week program and I took the opportunity to visit. I think our family may actually be from Krakow, but unfortunately all my great-aunts who would know are no longer with us. A few people actually came up to me speaking Polish, so I guess I could pass.
For some reason I wasn't expecting much, but Krakow is truly a lovely city. It's one of the few that wasn't bombed during the war, so all the old buildings are still there, at least in the city center. |
