I've lived in Tampa all my life. My parents were born in Tampa. My grandparents were born in Tampa. 75% of my great-grandparents were born in Tampa. That 4th generation citizenship might not seem like much in other places, but it puts me in a tiny minority around here.

That's the crux of Tampa's dillemna: the city is overrun by people from somewhere else who don't know and don't care to learn anything about its history and past culture.

Consequently, Tampa has devolved into a sprawling city of ugly suburban sameness with a few hidden gems tucked away. But downtown sure does look nice at sunset, don't it? :)

(By the way, the view in the picture has since been ruined by a huge sterile concrete dorm built right behind the University of Tampa's famous minerettes. Typical Tampa... )
