I've visited Celje several times, but never paid much attention to its image and atmosphere. For me it was a transitional place where we stopped at my cousins for a cup of coffee, rushing on soon to get home before dark. For a while it was a place where my boyfriend lived, but that didn't last too long. Until last month, all I could say about Celje was that it has a grand old castle, which used to house the Counts of Celje, the bank of Savinja for slow walks - and that's it.
But then VT came and changed my perspective, so I started thinking about going on a proper visit one day. Who knows when this would happen if I wasn't sent another VT gift - Marc, here known as Lochlainn, who stated it very clear that he would not do what every tourist in Slovenia did - i.e. go to Bled and Postojna Cave. We did a little brainstorming which revealed he was interested in archaeology, and my best friend, who comes from those parts, recommended the Regional Museum of Celje. Why not! Marc was happy to go somewhere not many tourists have been, and I was happy just because I was going somewhere after far too many days spent in Ljubljana. So off we went, picked up a couple of hitchers on the way, and finally came up with the following account.
P.S. Soncnica, who lives in Celje, was so kind as to tell me it's Hohenwarter house you're looking at. It's a brilliant building with a really intriguing architecture which includes assymetry, trompe d'oeil and some strange patterns. Find it on the pedestrian Gosposka street in the Old Town.
