So much has been said about Netherlands already that I'm really not feeling up to saying anything new and terribly helpful about it. I have a couple of great friends up there in West Friesland, in a place of a miraculous name Heerhugowaard, and if you really want to know practical and cultural stuff about Holland, you should ask them. The only thing I can truly say about it is that I always have a grand time there, which is, of course, thanks to Pieter and Efraim.
Last New Year provided another opportunity to pop by and the four of us (in our legendary Jetta, what else!) didn't think twice before taking it. We spent blissful two days in a brand new, large and warm flat of Pieter's (the fridge had more beer in it than I thought possible with its capacity), and jumped over to Amsterdam (upon request of those who haven't seen it yet). The city was fun as ever, buzzing with the pre-New Year athosphere and tempting with warmth seeping from behind the door of the stylish cafes. A pretty standard visit it would be if it didn't suddenly start snowing at dusk! Now there's one misconception I'd always had about Holland: that it knew the rain and drizzle all too well, but that it had practically never seen the snow. Pieter, the man in the know, said that it wouldn't last a second. But the flakes kept falling as if trying to prove us both wrong. It was such a romantic sight. The canals glowed in orange light and the streets cleared so that we were suddenly practically alone. This was a new Amsterdam, the one without crowds, which is rare enough to be thoroughly enjoyed. Wading in the snow which was quickly piling on the cobbled ground I loved it like I never did before. I couldn't resist taking this 'art' photo to bring the moment with me. Is the 'shakiness' a sign of my amateurism or perhaps a statement? That's up to you to find out!
