<font color=darkslateblue><B>Although I'm generally known as a person who ventures off the beaten path and shuns well-touristed destinations, I doubt I'd normally ever set my foot in Bergamo. It just didn't qualify as a destination - I hardly ever heard about it, maybe uttered in the same breath as its big neighbour Milano which obviously casts a shadow too long. My Lonely Planet was quite economic about it, and people I know just never got near it. How wrong. How terribly wrong! After seeing and experiencing it, I cannot decide whether Bergamo is best described as 'underrated' or even as 'ignored'. Because it's simply - great! Firstly, I can hardly remember seeing something like a city inside the city - in this case it's 'Upper Bergamo' - Citta Alta rising above the lower (and newer) part. Well, in fact I can't remember seeing anything like that at all! And that was only the first step into the treasury of so many overlooked gems.

As most of you know by now, I owe my discovery to VT - precisely to Utttz and Pollon (not to mention Titti and Rhiannon1968 - read the full story on Pollon's page!). Grazie milla! Discovering the new place has never been such fun than in the company of some 15 other VT-ers, most of which I met for the first time. Before you start looking round for pictures - I'm really sorry but I'd forgotten to wipe the lens of my Zenit in time, which means they came out rather blurred. But anyway, there's enough (good) stuff on other pages. What you see is once again the place seen through my strictly subjective and rather weird eye. Recorded with a little help of Utttz and Lalkens - thanks again, guys!
