Modena (stressed on the first syllable) came in by chance. I wanted to see Bologna, and since their hostel was fully booked at the time of my planned stay, I opted for this town situated some 30 km to the Northwest. Knowing that there's nothing like a boring place in Italy, I was in fact thrilled to have a chance to get to know another one. Well, Modena is hardly just another town - it's closely linked with two indisputably great Italian names - Pavarotti and Ferrari. First impression of Modena? Opulence! Its broad, clean and orderly vias and piazzas are lined by villas surrounded by splendid gardens of green, red and yellow. Even blocks of flats look so much better than their counterparts elsewhere on the globe - with their reddish facades glowing in the sunset, they can freely be called gems of their own kind. The impression is topped by streets totally free of any signs of poverty. I wasn't at all surprised to learn a couple of day later that Modena's in the top three of Italy's richest towns and cities. So - if you opt for that feel of a good life, set your compass to Modena! |
