A town built on mining ... The historical town of Goslar is situated near the Rammelsberg mines, where for 1,000 years [until 1988] silver, lead and zinc were mined. As a result of the mine's resources Goslar was important in the the Hanseatic League. Earlier it was one of the seats of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The medieval historic centre has about 1,500 half-timbered houses , some as old as the late 15th century. Goslar is located in the Harz Mts. . There are advantages to visiting Goslar in the winter as we did -- many fewer tourists. The disadvantage is that I froze my butt off. . This is the street with the crooked houses -- a little bit away from the center. |
