Please click on the picture to see a map of Valley of Fire State Park. The way we organized our visit was to enter on the south entrance and exit near Lake Mead. The scenery is worth the extra time to drive back to Las Vegas.

I kept saying "stop!" so I could take pictures -- it is so amazing to see these red rocks against the gray of the surrounding terrain. And they begin rather suddenly, perhaps a few here, a few there, then BOOM! Walls of them:)

The effects of wind and water over many centuries has produced the swirled look of a beehive for these rocks. Thus they are called -- The BEEHIVES!!

The detail in the erosion patterns is amazing. All this area was once a great sea -- a very different environment than the current desert one! It is also difficult to get a shot of ALL of the beehives together.

Things To Do: Atlatl Rock

This rock is the shape of the bow and arrow predecessor called an "atlatl," which was attached to a spear to make it go faster.
.
There is a campground nearby, which requires payment of an addtional fee. What is nice are the many toilets available thoughout the park. I only used the ones at the visitor center, but it certainly is a good idea!

The colors of the red rocks and the blue sky are stunning, but the cool of the shade is very welcome indeed on a hot May morning. It was surprising how much cooler the shade was!

Things To Do: The trail to Mouse's Tank

"Mouse's Tank" was the hideout of a renegade Native American who was active in the 1890's. It collected water in a natural basin and was almost impossible to locate.
.
Now it is only a 1/2 mile walk roundtrip from the parking lot -- although be prepared for the heat if you go in the summer.

Most people are busy looking up to see the petroglyphs -- when, in fact, one is surrounded by beauty worth a detailed examination closer to one's feet! Again note the vegetation surviving at the base of the rocks.

The petroglyphs are not the only reason to look up. It's difficult to choose which pictures to take as the variety of the erosion patterns on the rocks were amazing!
