Bandelier National Monument Things to Do

Things To Do: Tyuonyi Pueblo
  • Tip Rating:
  • While Bandelier is best known for the cave dwellings in the cliffs, there was also the Tyuonyi Pueblo in the canyon itself. The pueblo formed a circle with a large public plaza at the center. The canyon was first shown to the anthroplogist Adolph Bandelier in 1880 by people from the nearby Cochiti Pueblo. They told him that the people who had lived here [from about 600 A.D.to 1600 A.D.] were their ancestors .

Things To Do: A more complete view of the Tyuonyi Pueblo plaza
  • Tip Rating:
  • We visited Bandelier in late October. We really enjoyed the fall foliage colors against the cliffs. In any season I would recommend visiting early in the day before the crowds arrive.

Things To Do: The Cliffs are "tuff" :)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The erosion of the soft volcanic rock called tuff created natural caves, which the Anasazi then enlarged to create living and ceremonial spaces.

Things To Do: The Anasazi Caves
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the caves that the Anasazi enlarged into a living space. The walls were plastered with clay. In many cases the caves were the back rooms for houses built in front of the caves made from talus, or rock debris, found at the base of the canyon walls. No one really knows why the Anasazi abandoned their settlement here, but the suspicion is that they may have depleted the soil and the hunting in the canyon.

Things To Do: Up in the Cliffs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Up in the cliffs, where some of the Anasazi made their home. The inhabited caves were on the south side of the canyon to catch the winter sun.

Things To Do: A view of the Tyounyi pueblo from the cliffs
  • Tip Rating:
  • A view of the Tyounyi pueblo from the cliffs. The outline of the large central plaza is clearly visible. It's easy to walk through the plaza and not a difficult climb to view the cave dwellings, but there are more difficult hikes available for those who are interested. You can get maps at the entrance.

Things To Do: The ladders to the Ceremonial Cave
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first of four ladders leading to the Ceremonial Cave high up in the cliff. I must confess that I only made it halfway up the second ladder before quitting:(
    .
One of the most pleasant aspects of visiting Bandelier is walking though the woods in the canyon. There are also many longer trails beyond the archeological "loop."
