Naperville Travel Guide: 142 reviews and 277 photos

Naperville has grown from a 20,000 citizen farm town on the banks of the east branch of the DuPage River to a city of 133,000 and still growing. Unlike many other towns and cities Naperville still has a vibrant downtown thanks to some farsighted civic decisions. The "heart" of downtown Naperville is the Riverwalk, which has become the center of city-life.

The Teardown problem ...

The fabric of old Naperville is being changed drastically as smaller houses are being torn down and replaced with over-large expensive mansions. It's great for the tax base I guess -- but rough on those people who have been long-time residents of the modest neighborhoods being hit by this phenomenon. See the t-log for more ...
The houses on the top of the photo collage have now been replaced by those on the bottom.

This year it's farm animals!

It all started with the cows in Zurich, then in Chicago -- then we had giraffes, bears and I forget ... in Naperville. NOW it's farm animals. You will see these thoughout the downtown area sponsored by various local businesses -- great "photo-ops" for the doting toddler's parent ;)
I'm waiting to see what summer 2006 brings ....

Hi Sally, good to see you online. Somehow I have never been to Naperville, though I grew up in Evanston. But somehow we never made it over to the western suburbs, even though the company where my father worked had to relocate to the west side of Chicago when the time came to make room for what was then called the Sears Tower. (Is it true that both Sears and Marshall Fields have bit the dust in the past few years?)
