History, Architecture, & Landmarks: Chicago at night

  • Favorite Thing: Chicago is a magic city at night with its beautiful skyline and interestingly lit buildings. Many buildings in the loop, on the waterfront and on Michigan Ave. are lighted after dark, as are some of the bridges.

  • Favorite Thing: This is a view of the Chicago skyline from near the Columbus Ave. entrance for the Art Insititute. The arch is a remnant from the old Chicago Stock Exchange building.

  • Favorite Thing: The three landmarks are the John Hancock Center [the black building], Water Tower Place [it's labelled!] and part of original Water Tower. [It's old!]

Fondest Memory: Just walking around this part of Chicago early in the day before the streets get crowded.

  • Favorite Thing: This picture was taken on a rainy May 1, 2004, but in ANY weather the treasures inside are worth the wait.
    .
Hint: If you are a member or a member of an affiliated museum you can go inside and wait for the museum to open in comfort:)

  • Favorite Thing: I dropped by the famous George Seraut painting "La Grande Jatte" [made into a musical if you can believe it -- as well as a cover for a Land's End catalog.] But I digress -- or maybe not -- where does the line between life and art get drawn? Hard to tell in this picture!

  • Favorite Thing: Will you see Monet Haystack paintings in a row. I was lucky to catch them all "at home" -- as they are often requested for exhibits in other museums. Monet often used the same subject matter to demonstrate his impressionist theories regarding light and atmosphere.

History, Architecture, & Landmarks: The Chicago Architecture Foundation

  • Favorite Thing: This Chicago Architecture Foundation runs great tours of the city's architecture and neighborhoods. It also sponsors other programs as well and has a wonderful headquarters/store at 224 S. Michigan Ave.
    .
It's a great place to stop for several reasons. When you buy some from their store you are supporting a great cause and you also get to visit one of the city's great buildings -- The Santa Fe Railway Exchange.

History, Architecture, & Landmarks: The Santa Fe [Railway Exchange] Building

  • Favorite Thing: You will find this historic early skyscraper at 224 S. Michigan Ave. just opposite the Chicago Art Insitute. It was designed & built by DH Burnham & Co in 1904 , and is covered in white glazed terracotta tiles.
    .
Despite the decorative tile "skin", it is one of the early steel frame/concrete pier buildings that were the early skyscrapers. It is graced by a 2 story atrium for its lobby, which the Chicago Architecture Foundation uses for its exhibits.

  • Favorite Thing: The stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall in 1977 for the US Bicentennial are a "must-see" item at the Art Institute of Chicago. Your first sense of the windows is BLUE -- but after you look for a while the details emerge ...

Was scrolling through your food tips, in case you didn't know Skadarlijia is closed, replaced by yet another Mexican restaurant :-( Let me know if you find another good Serbian place, Simplon also bit the dust several years ago...
