Rudesheim am Rheim from the Seilbahn - Rüdesheim am Rhein

Rudesheim is small town overrun by tourists, yet ... it is a very easy way to get a bit of the Middle Rhine in a daytrip from the Frankfurt area. The main street, Drosselgasse is full of Rhine kitsch and beer gardens, but if you can look past those there is a great deal of charm to be found!

Other than the town there is the tram to the Niederwald Monument starring a large statue of Germania, hiking trails in the Niederwald itself and the possibility of a cruise on the Rhine.

So overlook the touristic aspects and enjoy the many sides of the Middle Rhein.

Ehrenfels Ruins & Vineyards

A boat trip on the Rhine will reveal 2 aspects of the region -- ruined castles and vineyards. One of the amazing things about this area of the Rheingau is the vineyards clinging to the hillsides. See the tips and travelogue for more information!

Two hurdygurdys are better than one!

Taking the Seilbahn to the Niederwald Monument area provides views, entertainment and good toilets! [As with most public toilets there is a charge ranging from 20 euro cents to 1 euro. It's a good idea to keep coins around for this purpose!]

Pros and Cons

Pros:Charming town, ruined castles, vineyards and forests! Plenty to see and do.
Cons:Too much tourist kitsch, as well as too many tourists!
In a nutshell:Worth the trip for the river, the wine and the Niederwald!

Ruedesheim is a beautiful place, but as you metionned, there are too many tourists! I liked a lot Niederwalddenkmal and walking there around.
