Getting TO/AROUND: Most long distance international flights land at Charles de Gaulle-Roissy. Since the collapse of part of the new Terminal 2 there have been many adjustments to normal gate locations for various airlines and destinations. So be sure to check with your airline and with the website for CDG. . Terminal 1 is architecturally interesting, but exceedingly annoying to use.

Getting TO/AROUND: The easiest way to get to Paris from London is the Eurostar train. [It's even faster if you catch it at Ashford, Kent where we did]. You are only under the channel for about 20 minutes -- in fact that is rather a non-event in my view.

Getting TO/AROUND: More often than not I take the Roissybus from the airport to Opera where I catch the metro, usually to my haunts in the 7eme. It cost under 10 euro, often provides a nice tour of the back streets of Montmartre on the way in and deposits you right behind the Opera Garnier on rue Scribe. Can't beat that! And you don't have to worry about the pickpockets on the RER.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Paris Metro works -- unless there is a strike! It is always smart to check the monitors to see what "lignes" are having trouble for the day. . You need to know the number of your line and what direction you want to go in. Other than that [and the long walks when you change] -- c'est très simple:) . Many of the stations are handsomely decorated.

Getting TO/AROUND: In 1998 the first new metro line in 60 years opened in Paris. It is a fully automated, driverless line that, at the moment, has 5 or so stops between Gare St. Lazare and Bibliothèque François Mitterrand. . It can be very useful during busy times as it parallels RER C and Line 1 at various points. The trains, platforms and stations are very futuristic in design. It is designated as "line 14" on the metro maps.

Getting TO/AROUND: Many of the métro station entrances have become fairly prosaic as very few of the original Guimard entrances survive. You will, however, see the red métro sign to guide you as the one here does for La Tour-Maubourg in the 7th. . On the other hand if you see the entrance or "bouche" on the right you are at the Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre station and are enjoying "Le Kiosque des Noctambules" ["noctambules" means "nightbirds"], opened near Comédie Français in October 2000. It is by Jean-Michel Othoniel. It is constructed of aluminum and glass "pearls".

Getting TO/AROUND: The one place that I know in central Paris that the metro goes above ground is on line 6 when it crosses the Seine between the Bir-Hakeim and Passy stations. You get a nice view of the Eiffel Tower as you cross the river. . This is a view of the La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle Station on line 6.

Getting TO/AROUND: I would recommend the "smart car" -- they can fit into those impossible parking spaces. This one was parked near rue Cler next to Café Marché on rue Chanps de Mars. . The longest I have ever seen a parking space in Paris stay empty was 45 seconds. This was done as a semi-scientific survey while sitting in a café in the Latin Quarter drinking wine :)

sdjeff4sc Sat Apr 5, 2008 03:54 UTC Shrimp, Love your page, but I ate at L'Ecluse (Grand Augustins) in October and tried the Tagliatelle - it was horrible! The pasta was rubbery and the foie gras was the worst I had. Not your fault, but I wouldn't eat there again. | Karolina01 Tue Feb 5, 2008 23:45 UTC I am checking the hotels for now, and I saved some of your websites. I'll come back to look at the other tips. Thank you. | mancera Fri Jan 18, 2008 19:44 UTC Like you Paris on my mind and my heart... I have the hope to be able to travel to Paris and to know it meanwhile...
