An upscale market street in the 7eme -- not as funky as others, but very nice vendors, cafes and stores. . Among the stores to look out for are Oliviers [for olive oil], good chocolate, cheese and wine stores, a boulangerie-patisserie which will provide for breakfast, lunch, dessert and of course your daily baguette needs:) . Some argue that it is too "touristy" since Rick Steves "discovered" it. I still enjoy a walk each visit to see what's new and what remains the same. Please enjoy the pig newly added this trip!

Entrance to the gardens only costs 1 euro -- there are plenty of Rodin sculptures around as well as a lovely cafe and great lawn chairs for whiling away the day -- as I saw several retirees doing. Don't forget your book!

On the left the beautiful flowers that you will find there in June. On the right some French schoolchildren on an outing to the museum. . One pleasure for me [as a teacher!] in visiting museums in Paris are the groups of young students earnestly carrying out their assignment. They take their culture and their food seriously!!!

The Eiffel Tower : both from the bottom and the top! . What is so amazing about the ET is how it both dominates the Paris skyline -- in a very elegant and useful beacon-like way AND it is very lacy and fragile looking. . This winter you can actually skate on the first level of the tower -- only 50 persons at a time though! . What takes time here is waiting for the elevator for the 3rd level. From a "cost-benefit" perspective -- level 2 is just fine! . Please click on the other photo link to see my views of the tower from 1992-2004., as well as a night picture taken from ave de la Bourdonnais in 2005.

Address: Champ de Mars
Directions: The closest metro station is Bir Hakeim, but I like the walk up the Champ de Mars passing by the peace memorial and enjoying the park as you approach the tower. So I would start from Ecole Militaire.

A former hospital for old and infirm soldiers founded by Louis XIV in 1670 is now a museum and the 'parking place' for Napoleon Bonaparte. . While there are many exhibits and an interesting chapel, the building itself and courtyard are the attraction for me. . Les Invalides was built by King Louis XIV in 1670. Napolean's body was interred there under the dome in 1861. . Among the others buried there are Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760 - 1836), who wrote France's national anthem, La Marseillaise and the author of "The Little Prince", Antoine Marie-Roger de Saint-Exupery (1900 - 1944). . Don't miss the courtyard or the view towards Pont St. Alexandre with the Grand and Petit Palais in view.

The memorial elements outside the new Documentation Center are very moving. They consist of the wall plaques, the curved metal wall naming the extermination camps and the wall of memory. It is not easy to visit. The security is VERY strict and the feelings engaged are even tougher ... But it is a don't miss for sure. . Please click on the additional pictures link to see more of the Shoah memorial.

You have to decide to visit this moving memorial as it is rather well-hidden behind Notre Dame. It was designed by the architect, Pingusson, in 1962 in memory of the 200,000 Jews who were deported from France during the Nazi horror. . It is normally open 10-12am and 2-5pm with extended hours in the summer.

sherrillbland Thu Mar 19, 2009 13:43 UTC I am so diggin' your Paris pages! We're off to France next year to visit our daughter who will be studying in Lyon. Of course we'll see Paris while we're there. I look forward to reading all your tips and viewing the pix! | vinc_bilb Sat Mar 7, 2009 21:49 UTC Bravo, simply. One comment: Smoking in Paris (and in France) is strictly not allowed till more thant 1 year, in all public areas (station, bar, night-club, restaurants...). The only exception is in dedicate open air areas. | footstool Fri Jan 23, 2009 12:50 UTC the statue of the "man in the wall"...where could I find this? I will be in Paree on Feb. 13, 09.
