Hanoi Things to Do

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh's Tomb
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is an monolithic edifice with draconian security measures and [usually] a long line. No purses, no cameras, no breathing almost!! When I was there in December 2003 they had a metal detector to go through.
    .
Uncle Ho looked peaceful and pink and not real at all!

Things To Do: Ho Chi Minh's House
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Ho Chi Minh lived in this house for a number of years [dates later] -- it IS simple, but it is also very tasteful. It is amazingly open to the elements -- I just hope the rain in the rainy season comes straight down!

Things To Do: Quan Thanh Temple
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This temple is at the side of a busy traffic circle between West Lake and the Ho Chi Minh/One PIllar Pagoda area. Built in 1010 it contains a 16 foot iron stature of the god Tran Vu -- one with Taoist origins -- made in 1667.

Things To Do: Statue of the god Tran Vu at Quan Thanh Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's hard to see in this picture, but there is a snake coiled around the staff that the figure is holding. The name of the temple translates as "Holy Mandarin".
    .
Thanks to hunterV for fixing the picture for me:)))

    West Lake: Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This beautiful pagoda is situated on an island in West Lake connected to the shore with a small bridge. It is a surprisingly big complex --and *almost* possible to get lost there! Don't be afraid to explore though as there is a second row of altars tucked way at the back

Things To Do: Aerial view of Tran Quoc
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Taken from my window at the Sofitel Plaza. Sorry for the poor resolution, but it was at dusk. You can see the extent of the complex.

Things To Do: Roofline Detail at Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • There is so much to see at this pagoda. Tran Quoc Pagoda is reputedly the oldest in Hanoi dating, in part, from the 6th century.

Things To Do: One of the many altars at Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Tip Rating:
  • This pagoda complex has had many names throughout its history. First it was called "The Foundation of the country", then "The Pacification Pagoda", then ... well you get the idea. Now it's called "Defense of the Country."

Things To Do: Statues of Kings at Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • These kings lined one of the side walls in the back temple area. Not a clue on the names, but they sure look good in gold :) The temple was restored in 1815.

Another cooking class, and this time in Hanoi too! Well, I'll be there in Dec so this sounds very tempting. Was it expensive?
