People: "Uncle Ho" is everywhere
  • Tip Rating:
  • HoChi Minh, for whom Saigon was renamed after the end of "The American War, was reportedly a simple man who would have abhored the cult of personality that has arisen around him, especially in the north.
    .
Here our intrepid VT-er takes a look at "Uncle Ho" in statue form in a seminar room at the university in HCMC.

People: Wedding Pictures at the Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • As noted in a "must see" tip, the cathedral is closed except for one Sunday service. But the young couples come here in large numbers to have their wedding pictures taken!

Local Customs: Why are the bottoms of the trees painted white??
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • I've heard 2 stories.
    1. To keep the insects from crawling up the trees.
    2. To keep the motorbikes from wrapping around the trees.

    You pick.

Local Customs: The fabled durian fruit ..
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This sign was next to the elevators in our hotel forbidding us to take the fruit to our rooms -- why?/ As good as it TASTES, the smell is overwhelmingly unpleasant.

People: Basic Transportation -- The Cyclo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The cyclo somehow still survives among the forest of small motorbikes. All it is is a bicycle with a passenger seat attached to the front. I like to imagine that this is a father taking his family for a ride ... They do warn you about protecting your belonging when you ride in one -- but your money etc... shouldn't be in your purse anyway.

    People: Local Industry
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The first floors of many of these houses are open to the street. Here various laborers fix various mechanical items, from motorbike engines to small appliances. Historically those working on a specific kind of task would be grouped in the same street.

People: Rooting for the home team!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The Vietnamese are avid sports fans, particularly for football. This was the victory celebration the evening that the Vietnamese Women's team won their match in the SEA Games.

    People: A local fan:)))
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This young boy didn't seem to understand why we wanted to take his picture [our group was from Chicago:))] -- he was working at a small shop selling SEA Game t-shirts and Vietnamese flags. In the spirit of the celebration underway in the streets we all stocked up!

  • Well at least in the tourist hotels -- including some dreadful music. ["Frosty the Snowman" etc...] This was the case in Thailand and Cambodia-- even the bar waitresses were dressed in little santa outfits. It was weird in Thailand and Cambodia, but more understandable in Vietnam, which has a Catholic tradition.

Excellent page on HCMC. I was equally captivated by the fleeing mother pix in the War Museum and took the exact picture:)
