It's still Saigon to many residents of what was renamed Hi Chi Minh City after the fall of the South Vietnamese government on April 30, 1975.

Saigon is crowded noisy, vital and full of capitalist fervor and energy. A city combining traditional hand labor and the sleek monuments of New Asia.

The picture above is The celebration in downtown Saigon of the women's football win [soccer to us statesiders!] in the South East Asia Games being held in Hanoi during our visit. The street was thronged with happy folks on motorbikes -- waving flags, cheering and generally in good humor. |
