You can purchase beautiful Thai silk scarves for anywhere from $4-20 USD, depending on where you bought it and the quality of the silk and the weaving. . The scarf on the right is what is called "ikat". The threads are tie dyed and then woven in the right order to achieve the pattern that you see.
What To Pay: The black one on the left was was purchased in Bangkok at the higher end of that range. The other two were purchased in Maha Sarakam in NE Thailand for $4-5 USD.

What To Buy: One of the things I wanted to purchase in Bangkok was a Thai Karen hilltribe "spirit lock" -- due to either my not finding the right place and/or being on a tour and/or people wanting to sell me gold & gems rather than hilltribe silver. . Anyway these were purchased on ebay -- the small one is more like the traditional sprtit lock used by the shaman in a healing ceremony. It would have the design appropriate to what was being healed and would be "recycled" afterwards -- the other function of the spirit lock was to protect the spirit of the person being healed from evil demons.
