New York City Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Edgar Allen Poe Cottage. In...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Edgar Allen Poe Cottage. In the Bronx. Yes, you read that right.
He did have a residence in the Village, but his cottage, the place where he wrote a good number of his major works, is in the Bronx (which was almost rural when he lived there).
You can visit it on Saturdays. It's located in Poe Park on the Grand Concourse. Take the D to Fordham Road/Grand Concourse. You'll walk a few blocks north on the Grand Concourse until you find the park and the cottage is surrounded by a fence in the northern section of the park (it's a small park).

  • Tip Rating:
  • Inwood Park is beautiful! I'm not telling you to visit here in lieu of Central Park, but if you have time and it's a nice day, you'll be amazed by Inwood parks cliffs and lush foliage.
Take the A train to the last stop in Inwood (the northern tip of Manhattan).

Off The Beaten Path: Walk across the Williamsburg...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walk across the Williamsburg Bride.

If you have a few hours to kill, this is a great form of exercise and an exciting way to see the NYC skyline. It's also extremely dichotomous : peace/solitude/romance vs. traffic/construction/subway passing.
    Great for picture taking, too!

    FROM NYC:
Get to Delancy Street, which is the next major block south of Houston and to the extreme east.

Off The Beaten Path: For good deals on clothes, you...
  • Tip Rating:
  • For good deals on clothes, you wouldn't think of going here:

    The Bronx!!!
Fordham Road between Jerome Avenue and Fordham University (past Grand Concourse). Take the 4 or D train to Fordham Road. Get out. Walk.
Yeah, you will all probably head straight to H and M in Manhattan, but really, you can find similar clothes for a fraction of the price on Fordham Road.

And for those of you punk/goth types: AVOID paying those insane prices on St. Mark's Place (don't avoid *going* to St. Marks Place, just check out Fordham Road before buying). I bought a pair of PVC pants on Fordham Road for...get this...FOUR dollars!!!! They would be 70 bucks on St. Marks Place.

Yeah, you have to look around a lot, here, but if you have the time, you'd be foolish not to try it.
There are also some good shoe stores here.
