Kate's Joint For the best in VEGAN comfort food, in an excellent East Village location. My favorite restaurant. This place is where all the locals hang/eat/drink/smoke (they have a smoking section), however any freak in the world would feel at home here:) The menu is extensive, lots of veggie choices, no meat, decent desserts, beer, wine, fresh juices
Favorite Dish: Unturkey Club. Fried Unchicken. Fake steak au Poivre. Their collard greens ROCK my world!

Restaurant Name: Maryanne's Mexican
First of all, excellent salsa gratis on the table with freshly made tortilla chips. Second, an entire vegetarian menu! Third, extensive margarita options. Fourth, HUGE menu!! Even my friends from California rave about this place.
Favorite Dish: The tofu taco salad--lots of lettuce, refried beans, avocado, jicama, and chunks of seasoned tofu in flour shell

Directions: The one I go to is on second avenue/fifth street in the East Village. There is also on on the upper east side and one in Chelsea.

Restaurant Name: 7A
The quintessential East Village dining experience! In the nice weather they have outdoor seating, and because it's right across from Thompkins Square Park, it's a very interesting people-watching experience. Weekend brunches are often crowded, but they offer you a good deal (and a great blood mary).
Favorite Dish: Veggie burger sandwich (with excellent fries), good variety of sandwiches and salads, too. The specials are all meat-oriented, not that this is such a big deal, since it's an extensive menu with lots of vegetarian options.

Directions: VERY easy to remember: the corner of East 7th and Avenue A!

Restaurant Name: Sidewalk Cafe
Another typical East Village type of place to eat decent food and people watch. Mixed crowd here, but very comfy and interesting. VERY IMPORTANT: They have a DAILY happy hour! (yes, this means weekends) good at both their bar (the bar half of the restaurant has live music in the back room and there's no cover)AND at the tables. The best part is that the hours are quite long--from 4 pm to 8! This seems to be the best happy hour in the East Village, because it's two for one(anything)--so you don't have to stick to those dreadful well drinks and crappy beer on tap.

Restaurant Name: Old Devil Moon
Kitsch!!! all over the damn place. Lights. East village crowd!! Porno cakes!
Favorite Dish: Has lots of southern specialities and offers big portions. I'm vegan and there are even options for the likes of me here. Yummy collard greens!!! Excellent jerk tofu. And if you like meat, think chicken fried steak, catfish, etc. Brunch is supposed to be spectacular here.
