Brugge Market Square by aussirose - Brugge

Brugge Market Square by aussirose

Brugge Market Square

Brugge Market Square in the centre of town is where all the roads lead to and is a hive of activity. Surrounded by shops, cafes, the lovely Town Hall and Belfry Tower, the Brugge Market Square is also where you will board your horse and carriage, bus tours etc.

We parked our bikes here after I stacked it in the middle of the square in front of everyone...haha.... and we quickly wandered off on foot to explore the city.

This place is also lovely at night. I would advise not to sit in a cafe or restaurant facing the Market Square as they are alot more expensive. Check out the many cafes and restaurants in the side streets instead.

Walking through the Beguinage in Brugge - Brugge

Walking through the Beguinage in Brugge

Enjoy Walking Through the Beguinage

This was a lovely peaceful place to walk around. Hidden from the bustling streets of Brugge, the Beguinage is a modern day convent.

In the old times there was a surplus of women as a result of war which took the lives of many men. These women formed communities where they brecame religious and took on the lives of nuns.

Originally, the old buildings here were founded by the Countess of Flanders, Margaretha of Constantinopel, daughter of Count Baldwin who conquered Constantinopel (now Istambul) during the crusades.

In 1937 the Beguinage became a monastery for the Benedictine sisters who still live here now.

We enjoyed our wander through.

Push bike riding in Brugge by aussirose - Brugge

Push Bike Riding in Brugge

This is probably the only city in Europe where I would consider push bike riding romantic :o) Why?...you say. - Well in Amsterdam the push bike riders were really pushy!! :o) In Paris it is too busy .... I'd rather walk there thanks :o)

But in Brugge riding a bike just seems to be the natural thing to do and most people I saw were riding in couples like hubby and I....so that is romantic :o)..... Well romantic that is until you stack your bike in front of everyone in the central market square haha. For the full story on that, check out my travelogue below.

We hired our bikes from our bed and breakfast. They just added it onto the bill. It was definately worth it and we enjoyed our ride into town and back.

Make sure you lock up your bike and better still....make sure you remember where you lock your bike up lol.

Brugge Canal Boat Trip by aussirose - Brugge

Brugge Canal Boat Trip by aussirose

Canal Boat Trip Brugge

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Brugge is the lovely canals.

This is definately a 'must do'. There are plenty of places along the canal to do this and it is not that expensive.

You don't need to pre-book....just buy your ticket and line up. The boats take quite a few people so if the line looks long, don't worry...just take a seat and enjoy the scenery :o)

Walking the quaint streets of Brugge

Brugge is small enough to walk the whole city.... in fact it is a place that you just want to walk and discover everything! :o)

The cute cobbledstone streets, the lovely little bridges, the quiet Convent, the quaint shops and Chocolate Shops :o) and the sound of horse and buggies and bells chiming..... it's all just beautiful!!

Brugge Horse & Carriage ride by aussirose - Brugge

Brugge Horse & Carriage ride by aussirose

Horse & Carriage ride in Brugge

To me Brugge is the capital of romance in Belgium. What better way to see the city than by horse and carriage :o)

I loved the sound of the horses trotting on the cobbledstone streets and hubby and I stopped many times to give them a friendly G'day and pat :o)

The only problem with this is the big lines because they are so popular. The Market Square is where you board.
