We went for a day to Bribie Island about one hour north of Brissy. I remember going there when I was little and catching the ferry before the bridge was built from the mainland. We always used to have pies and chips as a treat when we visited Bribie. I also remembered getting bogged in the sand in the old EH Holden. Dad always carried a bit of carpet in the boot for such occasions haha :o)

If you are visiting Brissy with kids, then Bribie Island is a great place for a day trip. It's easy to get there along the Bruce Highway, turn off is near Caboulture. There's free bbq's, great swings and trees to climb for the kids. Also the kids love to play with the little baby crabs. But beware of the slimy mud when you venture out for a dip......totally gross squishing through your feet......yuk!! :o)

We were going to hire a boat but unfortunately they were closed at the time. Anyway if you do, then the hire place is just before the Bribie Island bridge on your left. You don't need anything big because the water is very calm. But on the other side of the island it is full surf. When I was little we used to prefer the other side for a good body bash in the waves :o)

We stayed with my friend at Redcliffe about 30 minutes north of Brisbane. Redcliffe hasn't changed much over the years. I just love all the old little fibro and weatherboard houses and Queenslanders (that's high set old houses with a large verandah around). Here's the old jetty. You can catch a ferry from here to Morton Island. We didn't get there......oh well, maybe next time :o)

There's a few nice little additions to Redcliffe. They now have a lovely pool and gardens right on the beach front.....and it's free!!! I remember my little friend and I used to climb up and down the hill through the scrub before they created this little paradise. The best thing about visiting Redcliffe was the fish (shark) and chips - and the little old shop is still there!! :o)

Speaking of fish and chips.....we had a very yummy meal from the fish & chip shop across from the beach at Clontarf. It only cost $22 for 4 pieces of crumbed Flake (Shark), chips and a tub of gravey. Here's the view of Clontarf beach.

To get to Clontarf and Redcliffe you cross this humungous long bridge on Hornybrook Highway. Actually there's 2 bridges, ...the old one and the new one...... Mmmmm let's say that again......the old one and the older one haha :o) I remember when we used to travel on the older one (very rickety) as the old one was being built haha. It used to be the longest bridge in the southern hemisphere, but I don't think it is now.

See the little traffic signs? There's 3 lanes on the bridge and here you can see 2 green arrows indicating 2 lanes of traffic on the left. If it was only 1 green arrow and 2 red crosses that would mean only 1 lane of traffic on the left and 2 on the right. So it pays to check before venturing out into the middle lane :o)

The best time to swim around Sandgate/ Clontarf/ Redcliffe is when the tide is in. When it's out, it goes way out!! .....too far to walk for a dip :o)
