Well June is the start of Moonsoon season in Ho Chi Minh, so we came prepared with our umbrellas. Didn't have to bring them with us because as we disembarked from our cruise, we were handed light plastic raincoats. Took us about 10 minutes to unravel them and put them on......then when we got out, ....the rain had stopped haha

Well we'd heard so much about it from all your wonderful tips here on vt, that we just simply had to visit. Straight from the cruise, we hired a taxi for the day (only $40US), jumped in and headed off for the hilight of our cruise.....a trip to the Mekong Delta!!
A lot of people did the bus day trip to the Mekong and paid heaps more, but we got a real bargain and got to see 3 islands with 3 modes of transport and didn't have to travel so far to experience the same thing.
Only about an hour and half down the road our taxi arrived at Tien Gaing for a boat ride to our first island in the Ben Tre Province.

I had been looking forward to this....and wasn't dissapointed. The peaceful ambience as we slowely drifted through the palm lined canels was unforgettable. It was all I had ever anticipated and more!!

We had a few nice experiences on the little islands. The first thing we saw was the locals making coconut candy. It was only $1US a big packet and quite yummy.

Honey Tea anyone? ...And we also had a taste of the banana wine. Tasted a bit like sweet sherry.

Next the locals treated us to a fruit buffet and sang to us :o) I gave the two little girls $1US each and the bigger one $2US, which Kelli told me later she saw giving to the parents. .... As we were walking along some children were singing "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands...." in Vietnamese..... so we joined in :o)

Well I can now say I'm a professional Jay Walker!! I'm sure you've heard all about the crazy traffic of Ho Chi Minh and how it's a feat in itself to actually cross a road and make it to the other side in one piece! Well, ...we did it!! ....and I actually enjoyed it!! And thanks to all your tips here on vt I actually knew how to do it before hand. Easy,....just walk out from the curb slowely and keep walking and the bikes all go around you. .....Just make sure you cross when there's no taxis or trucks in sight :o)

Well I heard all about it here on vt and wasn't dissapointed. The Post Office in Ho Chi Minh is a beautiful building. Inside the architecture is something else!! A trip to Ho Chi Minh is not complete without posting a card from the Post Office :o)
