I've been coming to this charming little town since as long as I can remember. Throughout the centuries, the fortified town of Heusden was one of the prime targets to control the river area. In its history, Heusden belonged to the dukedom of Brabant, then for ages to the county of Holland, until finally it became part of the province of Brabant again. |
| | The old 17th century looks virtually untouched. But this is not exactly true. in the beginning of the 20th century, Heusden was falling into ruin. The harbor had been built up and the houses were shacks. After World War 2, a huge restoration effort was augmented to restore Heusden to its former glory. The little harbour was dug out again, the houses restored, the squares cleaned up and the fortifications renewed. Today, Heusden is a prima tourist destination for this part of the country and an exquisite example of what old Dutch fortress town were like in the days of the Golden Age!
As this page is still very new, I need to collect more pictures, therefore I have taken the liverty to use some pictures I found through the excellent site Heusden Tourism Board (www.htbheusden.nl) until I have more pics of my own! |
