Oasis of peace and green | NZ in the distance, coming from Heusden |
The tiny hamlet of Nederhemert-Zuid and the even tinier adjacent speck called Bern are located on a piece of land that locals refer to as 't Eiland (the Island). And as luck would have it, this little patch of land used to be an island in the Dutch river area. During the 20th century, one part of the island was dammed and another bridge was built so technically it's not separated anymore. However, this little piece of green still has a detached and separate feel to it. There has been no industrial development and no extra housing during the last 50 years or so. There has been a steady influx of day trippers in search for some R'n'R though and it can be crowded on a warm summer's day. But outside the warm season this is still very much a little piece of Holland that hasn't changed for more than half a century! |
| The castle - almost finished |
| | A kid's playground I used to come here a lot as a kid to play. My best friend's family was from here and as there was no traffic and no crime you were free to roam everywhere. Except, of course, the old ruins of a castle that was shot to bits in World War 2. So guess where ended up playing? :-) Nowadays, the castle is being restored and I'm sure it's going to be marvellous. But deep down inside I miss the spooky ruins surrounded by a murky moat hidden away in the woods. |
