This large excavation site in the middle of Rome illustrates the importance this city has had over the ages. Rome, already being the centre of the world 2000 years ago, was littered with temples, villas, palaces, arches and the like and nowhere are the remains more visible than in the Forum. Wander around (okay, amidst thousands of other tourists) and it only takes a little to imagine what the city must have looked like in Ceasar's time.

This hill, one of the 7 Hills of Rome, serves as a haven of peace amid the rush of modern-day Rome. Its ruins and gardens are quiet and the air is just that little bit fresher. Have a look at the Travelogue for more.

This Roman-built structure served as a fortress, prison and more. Now, it's a national monument and a beautiful example of how sturdy the Romans built their stuff! The Travelogue will show more. The beautiful Ponte Sant' Angelo leads from the city centre to the fortress and is worth a visit in itself.

What was originally a Roman temple for all the gods, is now a church for Mary and all the saints. Almost 2000 years old and the only surviving dome-structure, it doesn't fail to impress. The dome is 43 metres high and wide; unfortunately it was a tad too dark for my camera to take pics inside.

So you managed to fight your way to the busy traffic, the tourist crowds and the narrow streets to the Trevi Fountain. Is it really all it's cracked up to be? You better believe it! It's a masterpiece of baroque art, a fabulous meeting place and a wonderful spot to rest a while after all the walking you'll be doing. Don't worry about the crowds; they're not there to annoy you (although they probably will), so just find a place to sit and enjoy the sight. You'll see many folks throwing in a coin behind their shoulder, wishing they will one day return to Rome. Occasionally there's the Marcello Mastroianni/Anita Ekberg wannabe, trying to revive "La Dolce Vita" by dancing in the fountain, but that's seriously uncool: the movie is way better and it's not allowed anyway!

I'm in two minds about this place. The monuments are all top-notch and unique, but the abundance of crowds and people living off the tourists make this a trap nonetheless. However, it should be on your itinerary, if only for the magnificent views of Rome from the top and the vicinity of major shopping streets like Via Condotti that should satisfy even the most spoilt retail-therapist!

So many churches and even more treasures... Have a look at the Travelogue for some examples. Here's the statue of Mary and the baby Jesus in front of the Santa Maria Maggiore.
