Medium sized hotel, just off 5th Ave across from the NYC Public Library. Relatively quiet, but then we were there on a weekend. Terrific location for exploring the city. Easy place to catch cabs, or walk to Grand Central Station for the subway. Half a block away is the sublime Bryant Park. A great place to read the Sunday NY Times!
Unique Qualities: Marble baths, hairdryer in room, a shower-massage-head with enough waterpressure to make it worthwhile! Bath & Body shop shampoos and soaps. Bathrobe. I used Priceline.com and got a double room for $121 (plus all the taxes, etc brings it to $142)

I'll take a suite over a tiny little room anytime! We hit a $99/night weekend special for a 1 bedroom suite, and grabbed it. This hotel is an art deco masterpiece of a building. The staff was personable and helpful. The suite was spacious and comfortable, and we really enjoyed our stay here.
Unique Qualities: There's a gorgeous little restaurant/bar at the top with extraordinary views of the city. Off the lobby downstairs, the Zepher Cafe was a cute place for breakfast.

Address: 3 Mitchell Pl, New York, NY 10017
Directions: It's a little difficult getting to the entrance -- you have to go past it, driving uptown, turn right and come around the block to leave your car with the valet to be parked. (Valet parking was only $25 which is a pretty good deal in NYC).

Millenium Hilton: Be Aware of the View

I'm always ready to jump on a weekend hotel deal to make a trip to the city. In Aug 2003 we got a room at the Millenium Hilton for $125. (Rack rate is $299 I've seen similar deals at this hotel, being in the Financial district it is really "down" town, but there's a lot to do in the area.) Recently refurbished and reopened after 9/11, this place has all the bells and whistles you could want. 42" plasma screen TV, marble bath, big fluffy white towels, high-end linens on a very comfortable pillowtop mattress bed, great pillows, sound system, high speed internet, and the standard double room is VERY roomy with a great arm chair and hassock as well as a functional desk to work at (with that high-speed 'net I mentioned). Staff was great. Parking is expensive @$45/night.
Unique Qualities: The view from our 47th floor was amazing, but you really need to understand that this hotel is directly across from Ground Zero. It makes you feel very mortal. You are right across from the subway, and the great mecca for bargain shoppers, Century 21 is quite near by. $$$$$

This was the second time we snagged a great deal at an affinia.com suite hotel. $119 per night? You really can't beat that. Very comfy room, with nice tile bath and great bath products. There's a small kitchen at the entrance, but we didn't need use it as we were only there one night. Travelzoo's weekly top 20 deals often clue you into Affinia's special deals in NYC and they are always a great bargain. Valet parking :-)
Unique Qualities: There's a terrific bar downstairs, with a great view of the Empire State Building at night.

We got this hotel through Priceline for $115 (plus tax and fees it came to $137) for a weekend night. It is a great location, and our one-bedroom suite was spacious, immaculate, and very quiet -- we were on the first floor, which was really easy for getting in and out. The service was not as friendly and hospitable as I've come to expect from these smaller, all suite hotels that seem to have gotten more common in the city. We were missing an iron -- having searched in all three of the closets, plus the kitchen (there was a full kitchen!) and bathroom cabinets. When I asked for an iron at the front desk, the clerk rather rudely suggested that I needed to look in the closet. duh. About an hour later, my daughter walked down to the desk to see if we were ever going to see an iron -- the clerk rather rudely snapped at the bellman "Didn't you follow up on that?" I don't know who was the "weak link" there. The bellman did seem to dissapear when we were bringing in our bags, and again when we were leaving and headed out to pick upthe car.
Unique Qualities: There was a garage around the corner where 24 hour parking was available for hotel guests at $22 -- a very good deal for NYC. Aside from the surly staff, we really liked the suite, and slept like babies after our big night out on the town. The price category selection I'm making is based on 2 persons sharing the room...it would probably cost the same for just one, seeing as it was a "Priceline" deal.
