Things To Do: The Abbey de la Bussiere

  • This former Cistercien Abbey was founded in the 12th century. At one time, up to 300 monks lived and worked here. It was split up and sold to indivituals after the French Revolution. In the 19th century is was restaured, and in 1920 it was donated to the diocese of Dijon. Now it is open for spiritual retreats, professional meetings and conferences. The grounds are gorgeous, and it really feels like you've entered another time. It is open to the public to explore-- like we did!

  • The hospice was established and supported by the surrounding wine community. It was to give back to the community, and run for decades by selfless nuns who served as the nursing staff. I'll write a travelogue with more photos and descriptions of this unique and loving place.

Things To Do: Spend at least a day in Dijon
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a lovely town...and we got to visit on a day when they were holding an Antiques market. We followed a nice little brochure supplied by the folks from our B&B, and totally enjoyed the architecture as well as the people we met.

This is the Palais de Duc --- which was actually more interesting from outside, I thought.

I'd really like to see Dijon. The architecture indeed is beautiful. Don't you love wine tasting in France? Did you get to taste at any of the backyard winemaker's homes? Challenging but fun.

isn't it beautiful there? I've only been there once, to Beaune... (just saw the lying in state - eek! morbid!)

Sounds like a wonderful region - it is not too far from where I live, so we should try it one of these days! Thanks for sharing, Diane!
