We stayed at L'Hotel de Mericourt on our first trip. I believe we were the only American people there, although there was a British couple, a pair of Scandanavian women, and a French family we saw at breakfast in the pretty lobby/breakfast room. Tiny room, immaculate tile bath, miniscule closet...from what I hear quite normal! The staff and service was very nice, and we felt quite safe and at home. It has a very small elevator, but I preferred to use the circular stairs. Probably a two-star. Under $80 US/night
Unique Qualities: From the view, you can see this is nothing special. We prefer to spend our travel $$ on dining out rather than fancy hotels. It's been awhile since we stayed there, but I'd go back again. Quite charming.

Currently (2002) they are quoting about 90Euro for doubles, 70 for singles. All rooms have en suite baths.
Unique Qualities: The art deco lobby, breakfast room, and stairway are lovely. The chandaliers simply blew me away. The staff is tremendously helpful. Oh yes, and the 10euro per person breakfast buffet turns out to be a bargain if you like a large meal (and pretty much endless coffee!) in the morning.

Two stars. Perfect location in the Marais. I love the shopping here. I love the restaurants here. I love Place des Vosges, the Carnavalet, Picasso, walking to just about everywhere from here....They messed up our reservations a week before we got there and when I emailed to confirm....YIKES! Fortunately they "had a cancellation" and gave us a lovely double for 73 Euro/night. For those who "need" a shower curtain, we had a 1001 Dalmations curtain in our shower :-) Anyway, what else can I say but location, location, location. I love Paris. I'd rather spend the $$$ on dinner and wine!
Unique Qualities: The staff on site was a helpful as could be. When you check in, ask them to arrange for a transfer to the airport if that's how you're leaving. It's the "way to go" when it's time to go home.

This is a bargain priced hotel in a fabulous location. There is AC and you can access email at the front desk for a small fee. Typical tiny Parisian elevator that barely fits your luggage -- we generally took the winding stairway. Our room was bigger than the standard double at Grand Balcons (across the river, for example), but I think the hotels are pretty comparable. You could hear people in the hallways, but that may have also just been our neighbors: knock knock -- "Hey Mom -- It's me --- are you ready yet?" But I've stayed in places that were noisier. And there was very little street noise. There is a "club" next door -- I kept meaning to look it up online once we got home as I had some suspicions about it -- it is a "Swingers Club." ahem. (But there was no noise and no crowd so it really wasn't a problem. We noticed a doorman on duty on Saturday night, but no real activity.) The little block that comprises St. Bon is very discreet and pretty quiet. There's actually an entrance to an underground parking lot a couple doors down, but again it's not a noise producer.
Unique Qualities: I just loved the colors they used in the rooms -- very cheerful and bright, and the bathroom was lovely. Since we had a 7:30AM flight out on a Monday, we had the front desk arrange a shuttle pick up for us at 5AM and it worked out wonderfully. (We set it up the day we checked in so we wouldn't forget.)

Address: 3, rue Saint Bon, 4th arrondissement
Directions: In the Marais, steps away from the rue de Rivoli, it is near the Pompidou and many fine restaurants. The Chatelet metro stop is really big and confusing, but you can also use the Hotel de Ville stop and it's a quick walk.
