| Cycles on a canal bridge. |
On a drive through parts of Europe we stopped for a few days in Amsterdam, one of the cities I've long wanted to visit.
Two things are immediately obvious to the first-time visitor - water and bicycles, both of which are all around you all the time.
The architecture is very distinctive as are the houseboats which line the banks of the canals in the city centre.
It's a historic city of course, founded in the 12th century and is now the country's largest city with a metropolitan population of over one million.
The city centre is crowded with shops, cafes, restaurants, has museums, art galleries and many historic buildings, old and new, so there's plenty to see and do. The newer include Anne Frank's house, where she, her family and some friends hid for two years from the Nazi occupiers during WW2. |

| | A city of canals Although I knew there were a lot of canals in Amsterdam, the number was far more and they are much closer to each other than I imagined.
The map shows the picture better than I can describe. Spreading out like a spider-web from the port are rings of small canals, one after the other and very close together. |
| | More in Travelogues. I have included a couple of Tips, but I prefer to try to give a feeling, in words and pictures, for the places we visit so I prefer to use Travelogues and Albums.
I've done that with Amsterdam and you can find the Travelogues by clicking on the links. |
